As you might be able to guess, being vertically challenged can be… Well, a challenge! Especially when it comes to figuring out what to wear. Being merely 5’ tall, I’ve learned that there are a lot of things that can make me look even shorter than I already am. Can you relate? If so, I want to help! Here are 10 style tips for short women I wish I knew sooner rather than later!
10 Style Tips for Short Women
1. Show Off Your Ankles
When wearing ankle boots, pumps, or even sneakers with jeans, you’ll want to make sure that your ankle bones are showing. If the bottom of your pants is all bunched up, your legs are going to look stumpy. I posted the details about how I do this here!
2. Front Tuck Oversized Shirts
Oversized shirts may be on trend, but they also run the risk of swallowing you if not styled correctly. Front tucking your shirt will give you the shape and length your height needs.
3. Keep Skirts & Dresses Above the Knee
The shorter the hem, the taller you’ll look (I like mine at mid-thigh—more on that here). And besides, us petite girls have to show off the little leg we have, right?
4. Steer Clear of Large Patterns
There are few things more overwhelming on a petite girl than large patterns! Opt for petite prints or solid hues instead.
5. Go Monochromatic
One of my top style tips for short women? Wear a single shade from head to toe to instantly streamline your look. Bonus: It also makes getting ready in the morning so much easier.
6. Spotlight Your Waist
Whether it’s a peplum blazer or belted blouse, styles that emphasize your waist automatically give your body more definition.
7. Keep Away from Oversized Bags
The bigger the bag, the more it’s going to clutter your outfit. I’m not saying you should start trading in your trusty totes for little clutches—practicality comes first! But when you have the choice to downsize, you should take it.
8. Slip on Some Nude Shoes
Flesh toned shoes (especially ones with pointed toes) create a seamless transition from your legs to your feet, making your legs appear longer.
9. Avoid Excessive or Heavy Fabrics
I feel like this is the holy grail of all petite fashion rules. It’s super easy to overload a short frame—things like lots of layers or really thick materials are just going to weigh you down and make you look bigger.
10. Wear Deep V-Necks
A V-neck silhouette elongates the neck and chest, creating the illusion that you’re taller than you actually are (aka this is your new go-to neckline).

I’m wearing the petite trench coat in the pictures and it fits true to size. Those are size short jeans, too. I got them from Abercrombie which is where I buy most of my jeans. If you’re interested, I actually chat more about the best jeans for short legs [at least in my opinion] right here.
