Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying New Clothes

I think people assume that, since I’m a blogger, I’m sent a year’s supply of clothing at absolutely no cost. I WISH, haha, but no. While I do get some PR packages and products to try from time to time, I actually buy 99% of the outfits I share. No, I don’t have unlimited funds. But I do have some solid discipline, which I feel is critical for shopping smart! And by “shopping smart” I mean not breaking the bank for the sake of fashion. (Yes, it CAN be done.)

I realize that I encourage you all to shop daily. But I’m actually a huge advocate for responsible spending, and I’m extremely thoughtful about how I spend my hard earned money. So, naturally, I feel like I have to make sure I’m not sending any of you to the poor house, haha. That said, today I wanted to share the 5 questions I always ask myself before adding anything to my wardrobe. My hope is that you all will adopt this internal dialogue and start shopping smarter, too, if you don’t already!

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying New Clothes

  1. Do I love it? It can be tough to decide whether you absolutely LOVE something or just like it, especially in the heat of the moment. If you find yourself going in circles, take the piece you’re questioning home with you. If you don’t wear it within a week, take it back. I don’t know about you, but when I really love something I put it on almost immediately. So if it sits, that’s a huge red flag!
  2. Does it reflect my personal style? To answer this question, you need to have a clear understanding of what your personal style is. Once you figure that out, answering this question will help you shop more efficiently! For example, my style is comfortable and versatile. Hence the name of my blog ;). So if something’s even a little bit uncomfortable, I won’t buy it. I know I won’t want to fuss with it! And if I can’t style a piece multiple ways (more on this in #4), it’s a definite no go. It’s all about setting your own parameters! Determine what you’re allowed to say yes to, and/or what you have to say no to (like the things that tend to sit in your closet), and stick to your guns.
  3. Is the fit flattering? Some things look better on the hanger than on an actual human. Make sure you try everything on, and when you do ask yourself if that specific piece is flattering on you. And be honest with yourself!! Don’t get too caught up in what looks great on other people. Stick to things that look great on you and make you feel confident! As much as I love the oversized trend, I know I have a hard time rocking it. So I tend to stay away from oversized pieces. We can’t look good in everything!
  4. Can I style it 3+ ways? Going back to my comment in #2, I won’t buy anything if I can’t style it at least 3 ways. While I’m perfectly fine wearing the same piece multiple times, I don’t like wearing the same exact look multiple times. I just get bored, and I know a lot of you are the same way! That said, if you can’t style something multiple ways, you’ll likely grow tired of it faster. So before buying new clothings, try to envision how you can style each piece with things you already own. If you can’t get at least 3 unique outfits out of an item, don’t buy it.
  5. Is it really worth it? Never buy anything you’re just okay with solely because it’s cheap/on sale. And don’t buy something that’s great quality if it doesn’t fit within your budget. You’ll either waste your money entirely or spend what you don’t have. Neither are good.

At the end of the day, smart shopping is all about discipline and self awareness. Figure out your style and your habits, and then set your parameters. You’ll save yourself valuable time and money in the long run.
