Easy Hairstyles for Long Hair [A Hair Pin Hairstyle]

I’ve always loved doing my hair. But as I’ve gotten older, it’s one of those things that I’ve unintentionally gotten away from. Recently, though, I’ve been trying to put in more effort. And to get back on track I enlisted my childhood bestie, Jasmine [owner of Nix and Row Salon in Avon, Ohio] to educate me. Not only on the hair style trends for 2019, but on some easy hairstyles for long hair. And now I’m excited to share her secrets and my experiences with all of you!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting five super cute and quick hairstyles for long hair. These step-by-step hair tutorials will include all of the the tricks, techniques, and trendy hair accessories to recreate the easy hairstyles at home – all on your own. First up: a hair pin hairstyle.

[FYI: You’ll be able to find all of the tutorials right here, so be sure to bookmark that page for easy access!]

  • 1 Hair pins [These are the ones I’m wearing. Other options are linked below!]
  • Teasing comb [Mine is an oldie, but goodie. This one is similar and has great reviews.]
  • Flat iron [I have a 1-inch CHI and love it!]
  • 1-inch curling iron [This one is affordable and works well!]
  • Heat protecting spray [Neuro is my fav brand!!]
  • Texture spray [This one is awesome!]
  • Shine spray [Again, love this one! Pretty much anything made by Paul Mitchell is my jam… lol!]
  • Finishing spray [I have this one and this one and love them both the same.]

Hair Prep:

The way I prep my hair for styling is actually the way I wear my hair most of the time. I create gentle, loose curls for a fun, flirty texture. So just an FYI, you’ll be seeing this step in most of my future hair tutorials. You’ll master it in no time! 😉

1. Working with dry hair [ideally hair that’s been blown out with a round brush; but I’ll save that tutorial for another day], part your hair on the side [left or right, whatever you prefer].

2. Using a flat iron, go through your full head of hair and smooth only your roots [about 2 inches deep]. This will help prevent fly aways and keep the overall look clean.

3. Going back through your hair, use a 1-inch curling iron to curl your hair.

  • Break hair up into 2-inch sections, curling one section at a time.
  • Curl all sections away from your face.
  • Stop the curling iron about 1.5 inches away from your root.
  • Let the curls cool completely before gently shaking them out to loosen them up. Note that if your curls are even the least bit warm when you shake them out, they might fall completely.

4. Gently tease your hair at the root to create desired volume.

5. Use a light layer of finishing spray to hold the prepped hair in place. You want to go light so the hair is still flexible when you go to style!

Hair Styling:

Now that the hair is prepped, you’re ready for styling! Here’s what you’ll do for this particular hair pin style.

Step 1:

On the side of the part where there’s less hair, take about a 1-inch chunk from the front and pull to the side. You’ll be leaving this hair out of the style.

Step 2:

Working behind the 1-inch chunk, push one of the hair pins into the side of the head, working from the temple back. As you push the hair pin back, hold the hair below it down tightly to keep the top smooth and tight.

Step 3:

Holding the hair pin tightly against the head, tug lightly at the hair above it to loosen it up evenly.

Step 4:

Working in the opposite direction, push the second pin in below the first [so from back to front]. This will ensure a secure hold. >> Don’t forget, as you push the pin in you’re going to want to hold the hair below it down, tugging down on it lightly so the hair above the pins doesn’t move.

Step 5:

Gently tease the hair around the pins for added volume. You can also tease the inside ring of some of your curls to keep them tight and give them some texture. Spray the entire style with finish spray to keep it in place!

Voila! An adorable, but easy way to wear hair pins.

I have to send a special shoutout to Jasmine for dropping her knowledge! We’re very excited to bring you all more hair tutorials soon!

PS: I do want to say that this style was created with my natural hair. AKA – WITHOUT my hair extensions. I did that on purpose. I just really wanted to prove that you don’t need a head full of extensions to create fun, pretty looks! My hair isn’t super thick, and it’s actually pretty thin throughout the front. So I hope that goes to show that this is a look pretty much anyone can pull off!
