How to Clean Your Whole House in a Day (The Ultimate Guide)

When cleaning tasks get pushed off until they no longer can be, knowing how to clean your whole house in a day comes in handy! That’s why I created this guide.

Whether you’re expecting guests tomorrow or just can’t deal with living in a messy house for another second, here I’m sharing some effective tips for quick cleaning.

Please note that you might spend an entire day cleaning your house and still have more to do – that’s perfectly okay.

We all have different starting points, and truly there’s only so much you can do in a 24-hour period.

The goal of this guide is to help you make solid progress in the time you do have. You’ll be in a better spot than where you started, I promise!

If you do get through your initial cleanup and find yourself with extra time, then (and only then) you could consider doing some deep cleaning where you feel it’s necessary.

How to Clean Your Whole House in a Day: 11 Helpful Tips to Tackle as Much as Possible

The level of cleanliness you’re able to achieve in a day’s time depends on the current condition of your home. At the very least, you should be able to tidy up and remove surface-level dirt and dust in this timeframe. Here are some tips to help you get as much done as possible!

Quick PSA: Please make sure that you read the labels of your cleaning products before using them. While I like to provide you with recommendations, you have to be sure the surfaces in your home can tolerate whatever it is you’re using. For instance, I know my cabinets cannot tolerate any products due to the way they are treated. That said, I can only clean them with a sponge and warm water. I just felt compelled to say this because I don’t want you ruining your beautiful home in the process of cleaning it.

1. Plan Your Project

Every successful cleaning mission starts with a solid plan. Take a few minutes to jot down the areas of your house that need attention. Break it down room by room, listing specific tasks for each space. Having a cleaning checklist will keep you focused and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

Since you’re trying to clean your house in a single day, just make sure that you’re realistic about what you can achieve and prioritize accordingly. This might not be the best time to steam clean all of your area rugs. You might not have time to scrub all of your bathroom floors by hand, either. 

I know it can be really easy to go down the cleaning rabbit hole, which is why it’s important to have a plan on paper that’s completely realistic BEFORE you start.

2. Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary cleaning products on hand. Consider what areas of your home are outlined in your plan, then gather accordingly. Your cleaning supply list might include all or some of the following:

  • Multi-Purpose Cleaner (I like to use Seventh Generation Multi-Purpose Cleaner because it’s affordable, effective, and clean).
  • Microfiber Cloth
  • Vacuum Cleaner (We are huge fans of this Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner. I love how lightweight it is since I’m constantly carrying it up and down stairs. I love that it has multiple attachments, too. I use it to clean my sofas, bed, and even my car.)
  • Mop and Bucket (Obviously any old mop and bucket will do, but I hear great things about the O-Cedar EasyWring RinseClean Spin Mop & Bucket System. It has a two-tank system that separates clean and dirty water. So every time you go to rinse your mop, your rinsing it in clean water!)
  • Broom and Dustpan
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Trash Bags
  • Scrub Brushes
  • Dusters (I like to use my Swiffer duster for easy-to-clean surfaces like dressers, nightstands, sideboards, etc. As for surfaces that are a bit more difficult to dust, like baseboards, I like to use a damp duster sponge. They just get that thick, grimy dust off a whole lot easier.)
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Clean Sponge
  • Paper Towels
  • Cleaning Wipes
  • White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda (Mixing baking soda with water creates a cleaning solution that has so many usages! You can use this DIY cleaner to clean grout, sinks, and even your refrigerator.)

Having everything within reach will save you time and the easiest way to prevent unnecessary interruptions during your cleaning spree.

Cordless Vacuum

This is lightweight, and it comes with a variety of cleaning attachments.

Small Spot Cleaner

I love this for treating stains on rugs, furniture, and kids items like car seats.

Steam and Spin Mop

This cleans and disinfects hard surface, even hardwood floors.

3. Eliminate Distractions

If you want to successfully clean your entire house in a day, then you’re going to have to eliminate all distractions and focus on the task at hand.

Put your phone, or whatever tempts you to waste time, in a place you won’t see it. When it’s out of sight, it’ll be out of mind.

4. Declutter First

A cluttered space can hinder your cleaning efforts, so you’ll want to start by decluttering each room. 

Grab 4 bins or baskets and go through each area, gathering items that don’t belong. 

Sort them into 4 categories (1 per basket): move (to another area of the house), donate, throw away, and recycle. 

Once you’ve cleared the clutter, you’ll find it much easier to clean and organize the space.

5. Work from Top to Bottom

When it’s time to start cleaning, an effective way is to work from top to bottom.

Start by dusting ceiling fans, light fixtures, and shelves before moving on to lower surfaces like countertops and tables. This way, any dust or dirt that falls will be picked up as you work your way down.

6. Tackle One Room at a Time

Focus on completing an entire room before moving on to the next. This will prevent overwhelm, allow you to see quick progress, and keep you motivated to move forward.

I recommend hitting high-traffic areas first, especially if you’re expecting company. That way the spaces people will more than likely be in will be good to go, even if you accidentally run out of time.

7. Touch-Up Low Visibility Areas

You don’t want to overlook low visibility areas like baseboards, behind furniture, and inside of cabinets. However, you only have so much time on your hands! 

Rather than taking a lot of time to clean these areas, give them a quick touch up.

If there’s a huge scuff on a baseboard, wipe it off. If there’s noticeable debris behind a piece of furniture, clean it up. And if there’s stuff shoved in cabinets that can be addressed quickly (like garbage), go ahead and do so. 

I understand not wanting to ignore these things completely, but don’t let them keep you from cleaning the rest of the house. You can always circle back to them when you have more time.

8. Set a Timer

To stay on track and avoid getting bogged down in one area, consider setting a timer for each room. This will help you stay focused and ensure that you’re making steady progress throughout the day.

9. Enlist Help

Cleaning doesn’t have to be a solo endeavor, especially if you share your home with others. That said, you should absolutely ask family members and/or roommates for cleaning help. That way you can divide and conquer the tasks, and get your messy home in order sooner than later.

Assign each person a specific area or task to tackle, and I promise the workload will be so much more manageable.

10. Take Breaks

Cleaning an entire home in a day is no small feat, so don’t forget to take breaks when needed. Step outside for some fresh air, grab a snack, or simply sit down and relax for a few minutes. Give yourself permission to take breaks to prevent burnout and keep your energy levels up.

11. Manage Expectations

I’ve said it a few times, but I’m going to say it again – there’s only so much you can do in a day. That being said, be sure to set realistic expectations for yourself. Otherwise, you might set yourself up for disappointment.

When it’s all said and done, be proud of what you’ve accomplished! Also, if you’ve not implemented routine cleaning in awhile (or ever), perhaps this project will inspire you to do so. It’s a lot easier to clean house when it’s done regularly – not all at once, once in a while.

Deep Cleaning Tips for When You Have Time

Deep cleaning your home goes beyond just tidying up and removing surface-level dirt and dust. It involves thorough cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, appliances, and fixtures to eliminate grime, germs, bacteria, and allergens.

By giving your home a good deep clean, you don’t just improve its aesthetic (although that’s a huge bonus). You also enhance the air quality, prolong the lifespan of your valuables, eliminate odors, and prevent pests and infestations. 

While I don’t think it’s realistic to deep clean your whole house in a day (that just sounds exhausting), I think it’s smart to try and get a little bit done if you have free time. Especially if your cleaning supplies are already out!

That said, here are some tips and tricks for deep cleaning the main areas of your home.

Living Room Deep Cleaning Tips

Giving your living room a deep clean not only makes it look and feel more inviting, but also creates a healthier environment for you and your loved ones. Here are some tips for getting your living room squeaky clean.

1. Dust and Vacuum: Dusting and vacuuming are essential steps in routine cleaning, but you’ll want to do this when you deep clean too. Removing dirt, dust, and debris are critical to creating a fresh and tidy space.

Be sure to dust all surfaces, including shelves, coffee tables, picture frames, electronics, side boards, and more. A dry microfiber cloth or a Swiffer duster are great for collecting dust and not just spreading it around.

Once that’s done, vacuum all of the debris that has collected on the ground. If you have hard floors in your living room, you’ll want to mop them to finish them off.

2. Clean Upholstery: Upholstered furniture like sofas, armchairs, and ottomans can harbor dust, dirt, pet hair, and allergens. That’s why you’ll want to deep clean it every so often!

To deep clean upholstery, start by vacuuming the furniture using an upholstery attachment to remove loose debris. Next, use a steam cleaner to deep clean the fabric and kill bacteria.

We’re big fans of the Little Green Machine ProHeat in our house – it works wonders!

3. Clean Carpets and Rugs: Carpets and rugs can trap dirt, dust, pet dander, and allergens, making deep cleaning essential. Especially if you have little kids who are constantly crawling and/or playing on the floor.

If your rugs are washing machine safe, that’s the way to go!

For items that are not washing machine safe, I recommend hiring a carpet cleaning service or buying your own carpet cleaner (like the Shark CarpetXpert Deep Carpet Cleaner) to get the job done.

4. Wash Windows: How windows get so dirty so quickly, I will never know, haha.

To deep clean them, start by removing dust and dirt from window sills and frames. You can use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to do this.

Next, clean the windows inside and out using a glass cleaner and lint-free cloth.

5. Declutter and Organize: A clutter-free living room not only looks more spacious and inviting, but it also makes it easier to maintain cleanliness and order.

Kitchen Deep Cleaning Tips

Keeping your kitchen clean and organized is essential for hygiene, food safety, and overall functionality. Here are some tips for getting the job done right.

1. Clean Appliances: Empty your appliances (think refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, microwave, etc.) and clean them inside and out. Remove food residue, spills, or grease. Scrub handles, knobs, and buttons, which can harbor bacteria and germs.

You can clean your appliances with a damp cloth or sponge and an all-purpose cleaner.

Personally, I prefer to use a baking soda and water mixture on my refrigerator specifically. It cleans while eliminating odors! I mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda for every cup of hot water.

2. Scrub Surfaces: Next, focus on cleaning and sanitizing the surfaces in your kitchen. This includes countertops, backsplashes, cabinets, and drawers. Use a non-abrasive sponge or cloth, and an appropriate cleaner, to scrub away any stuck-on food or grease.

3. Deep Clean the Sink: The kitchen sink is one of the most heavily used and dirtiest areas in the kitchen. It’s essential to deep clean it regularly to prevent the buildup of food residue, grease, and bacteria.

Working on an empty sink, clean the sink basin and faucet using a mild dish soap or a commercial kitchen cleaner and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Disinfect the sink and faucet using a commercial disinfectant spray, this will ensure bacteria is killed off completely.

4. Clean and Organize Pantry: A clean and organized pantry not only makes it easier to find and access ingredients, but it also helps prevent food waste and spoilage.

Start by removing all items from your pantry shelves and wiping them down with a damp microfiber cloth or sponge to remove any dust, crumbs, or spills.

Sort through items and dispose of anything that’s expired. If there are unopened, non-perishable items that you no longer need or use, consider donating them to a local food bank.

From there, group similar items together and organize them into storage bins before putting them back.

5. Clean Floor: Finally, you’ll want to sweep or vacuum your kitchen floor to remove crumbs, dirt, and dust. Once that’s done, grab a mop and bucket to wipe them down and leave them sparkling clean.

If you have kitchen rugs, this would be the time to wash them.

Floor Cleaner

I’ve tried a lot of floor cleaners, but I really love this Bissell multi-surface floor cleaner. You DO NOT need any special equipment to use this. There are instructions on the back for using a mop and bucket! And, honestly, it works like a charm. I use it on my hardwood floors weekly, and it removes all the toddler grime (IYKYK) so easily.

Bedroom Deep Cleaning Tips

Keeping your bedroom clean and organized is essential for creating a space conducive to rest and relaxation. Here are some tips for deep cleaning your little sanctuary.

1. Launder Your Linens: Start by stripping the bed of all linens, including sheets, mattress toppers, pillowcases, blankets, and any decorative pillows or throws. Launder them according to their care instructions to remove dust, dirt, and allergens.

2. Vacuum Mattress: Mattresses can harbor dust mites, allergens, and bacteria, so it’s essential to vacuum them regularly to keep them clean and hygienic. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to vacuum the mattress thoroughly, paying special attention to seams, crevices, and tufted areas where dust and debris tend to accumulate.

3. Organize Closet: A clean and organized closet not only makes it easier to find and access your clothing and accessories, but it also promotes a sense of calm and order in your bedroom.

Laundry Room Deep Cleaning Tips

Keeping your laundry room clean and organized not only makes doing laundry more efficient and enjoyable but also prolongs the life of your clothing and laundry appliances.

1. Clean Washing Machine: To deep clean your washing machine, start by running a cycle with hot water and vinegar to remove any buildup of detergent, fabric softener, and grime.

Add two cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser or directly into the drum, then run the machine on the hottest and longest cycle available. Once the cycle is complete, wipe down the inside of the drum, door gasket, and detergent dispenser with a damp cloth or sponge to remove any remaining residue. If your washing machine has a self-cleaning function, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate it and maintain optimal performance and cleanliness.

Repeat this process monthly to keep your washing machine clean and odor-free.

2. Organize Supplies: Take this opportunity to declutter and organize your laundry supplies, including detergent, fabric softener, stain remover, dryer sheets, and other laundry essentials.

Remove any empty or expired containers and consolidate half-empty bottles or boxes to save space and reduce clutter. Consider investing in storage solutions such as shelves, bins, baskets, or cabinets to keep supplies organized and accessible. Label containers or shelves with the contents to make it easier to find what you need.

Basement Deep Cleaning Tips

Whether you use your basement for storage, recreation, or as a functional living area, keeping it clean and organized is essential for maintaining a healthy environment. Here’s what you’ll want to do to deep clean your basement.

1. Declutter: Start by decluttering the basement and removing any items that you no longer need, use, or love. Be ruthless and let go of anything that is broken, outdated, or no longer serves a purpose.

2. Dust: Now that surfaces are cleared, go ahead and dust everything – shelves, storage containers, furniture, electronics, etc.

3. Clean Floors: Vacuum the floors to remove dirt, dust, crumbs, and so on. Be sure to use a crevice tool or brush attachment to reach into corners, along baseboards, and under furniture.

Once that’s done, use a mop and carpet cleaner to finish off the hard surfaces and rugs.

4. Inspect for Mold and Mildew: Take this opportunity to inspect your basement for signs of mold and mildew. Signs can include, but are not limited to: musty odors, discolored walls or ceilings, and visible patches of mold or mildew.

If you find any mold or mildew, it’s essential to address it promptly to prevent it from spreading and causing further damage. Consider investing in a dehumidifier to regulate humidity levels in the basement and prevent future mold and mildew growth.

5. Check for Leaks or Water Damage: Additionally, you’ll want to inspect your basement for signs of water infiltration. With this, you’re looking for dampness, water stains, and puddles or pooling water.

Check the foundation walls, floors, and ceiling for cracks or gaps where water could enter, and seal any openings with caulk or waterproof sealant. Ensure that your basement windows and doors are properly sealed and weatherstripped to prevent water intrusion, too.

Also, keep in mind that not everything has to be done every single week. Bigger projects, like deep cleaning, can be done quarterly or even annually.
