My Healthy Hair Routine

One of the compliments I receive the most is on my hair. No joke, my sorority “little” swears she joined our chapter because my mane attracted her – LOL! But to be perfectly honest, I’m not sure why. I spent YEARS abusing my hair – constantly lightening it, putting hot tools on it, the list goes on. And, in my opinion, it was pretty obvious – broken and dry beyond repair. Or so I thought.

About 2 years ago I told my stylist (Jasmine, the one who’s been doing these hair tutorials with me) that I was ready to do whatever I had to do to nurse my hair back to health. It had gotten to the point where it wouldn’t grow past my shoulders because the continuous breakage prevented it. Together we created a healthy hair routine that I now swear by. And today I’m going to share it with all of you!

So grab your notepad and get ready to take notes! Or really, just bookmark this page. You can always come back to it. 😉 Ready? Let’s do this!

Alright, friends. Here’s how I got my hair longer, thicker, shinier, and altogether more healthy!

1. I stopped bleaching it.

I know, I know, it’s SO hard. There are so many cool trends that require bleaching, and experimenting is fun!! But this is probably the most critical piece of my healthy hair routine. It could keep you from having major problems in the first place.

Here’s the thing – hair bleach is drying and causes breakage. Even after a single application. So when you use it month after month, year after year, you only dry and break your hair further. So for the past 2+ years I’ve only colored my roots. And that’s just to cover what I call my “glitters” [gray hairs ;)]. As the bleached areas have grown out, we’ve cut them…removing the problem areas without adding more of them.

2. I started getting regular haircuts.

And by regular I mean about every 8 weeks. Sometimes Jasmine says I don’t need one, which is fine with me! But I let her decide when I go in for my color. That’s why it’s so important to find a stylist that you love and trust! Jasmine does what’s best for me which I really appreciate. She knows I want my hair to grow, so she only cuts off what she has to. But keeping those ends fresh will prevent them from splitting and – worse – completely breaking off! That’s why regular haircuts are so important.

Side Note: I’ve also let my layers grow to nearly the same length. I had always been told I needed layers, when in reality they just made my hair a lot thinner than what it actually is. So with my hair now being about the same length across the board, it feels SO much fuller!!

3. I switched to professional grade products.

Specifically, I started using the Unite Hair 7 Seconds Detangler, and pretty much every Neuro product [a Paul Mitchell line] that exists, lol [shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant/primer, conditioning treatment, etc.]! They are all relatively affordable, and they last me months on end since I only wash and style my hair 2-3 times per week.

The problem with “cheaper” hair products [like what you’d buy at the drug store] is that they contain crappy ingredients that deliver “instant results”. But you pay the price later! For example, silicones, aka plastics. This ingredient makes hair LOOK shiny after one use. But eventually it builds up and makes hair look dull and lifeless. And that’s just ONE crappy ingredient these products contain. There are several.

PS: If you’re wondering how I know all of this, I was the marketing director at a high-end salon and spa chain for nearly 4 years. 😉

4. I minimized my hot tool usage.

I used to use hot tools daily. Now, whether I straighten my hair or curl it, I only put hot tools on my hair 2-3 times per week. Typically, I do it after I wash and round brush [dry] it. On the off days, all I do is blow dry my hair for maybe 30 seconds – it’s just enough heat to smooth the kink I get from sleeping in a hair tie. Then I brush and go.

Yeah, if I start with curls they do get looser as the days go on. But the messy look is in anyways, and honestly that’s when I get the most compliments on my hair – when it’s really loose and wavy! So I roll with it, only touching up super straight pieces if I have to. And, clearly, it has helped!
