What Flatters My Body Shape? [Dress Edition]

Have you ever spotted a dress in a store, fallen in love, tried it on, and then cringed a little at how it looked on you? Yeah, same. Just so you know, it had nothing to do with you and everything to do with what you were wearing.

Theres so many different trends, silhouettes, and patterns available to us right now, but that doesnt mean any of it is actually guaranteed to look good on uswhich is normal and okay! But when we dont know how to search for products that will truly flatter us (especially when it comes to our body types), we feel a little more insecure than we should. Thats why I wanted to put together a guide of all the best dresses for your body type, so you can feel confident as you get ready in the morning and go about your day being the rock star that you are.

Pear Body Shape

When you’re a pear shape, the widest part of your body is your hips, so the key is to balance out your bottom half by adding more emphasis to your top half. A fit-and-flare dress is perfect for this, because it’ll play up your waist and flow beautifully over your hips.

Hourglass Body Shape

Three words: Rock those curves! Belted and wrap dresses will allow you to figure out the best way to do that, and allow some flexibility as you create a defining shape.

Apple Body Shape

With an apple shape (slimmer lower body, more weight around the middle), flowy styles will be your best friend. And lucky for you, theres SO many options! Swing, empire, drop waist, shirt, smockThe list of silhouettes goes on and on.

Rectangle Body Shape

When youre relatively straight from head to toe, your goal should be to create the illusion of curves with a-line and wrap dresses.

Inverted Triangle Body Shape

Broad shoulders, slim hips, and shapely legs call for some good old fashioned fit-and-flare dresses that balance out your broad shoulders while also creating some shape.

Knowing the styles that flatter your shape can definitely help you sift through all of the options out there. But at the end of the day, you know yourself best, so don’t let these “rules” keep you from wearing things that make you feel beautiful. I wear flowy, maxi dresses all the time and they are by no means the most flattering on me. But confidence is key!
